Lt. Jackson Archer. Designation: Cybernetically Enhanced Human, aka “A Boomer.” Current Status: Unknown.

Lt. Jackson Archer is an original concept character I created and is veteran of numerous wars that have yet to happen. When a series of devastating losses to the Dxlyccr Emperium left Earth and its military forces in shambles, Archer volunteered for an experimental program guaranteed to enhance every solider and make each worth ten of their non-enhanced counterparts. He underwent a series of prolonged and painful surgeries that left him scarred psychologically and physically to become a Boomer, a cybernetically enhanced solider. Even with the addition of Boomers to the ranks, Earth barely survived the Emperium War, and the returning Boomers soon discovered the new fractured society had little tolerance for anything—or anyone—they considered “alien.”

Cyborgs have long been a staple of science fiction literature, film, and art. From Marvel’s Cable to Star Trek’s Borg or Star Wars’ Darth Vader to James Cameron’s Terminators, cyborgs both fascinate and terrify us. How does one remain human when the mechanical is taking over? The answer is one that science fiction, and even horror, has tried to answer and yet the question still plagues us. With the advances in real world technology, especially medical technology that is saving and changing lives daily, cyborgs will continue to play a role in literature, film, art, and possibly even our very real futures.
